The City and the Artist
Editorial & Critical Writing
What is the role of the city in the formation of creative culture? Inspiration and influence: exploring the correlation between the metropolis and the artist.
The final year dissertation focuses on the correlation between the city and the artist and how they influence and shape each other. Drawing on a wide ranging literature review on urban and cultural studies, it advances a sociological interpretation of the city and demonstrates how cities have become crucibles of creativity and facilitated the formation of culture. Through the visual analysis of two case studies, The Great Beauty (2013) by Sorrentino and the New York City subway graphics by Vignelli (1970), it investigates city representation in general and the meanings and implications the specific cases involve.
along with the written thesis, the final submission also consisted in a designed, hand–bound book with a particular format resembling a city map. It relates the main themes of both case studies which are linked to city representation and city navigation.By using the technique of expressive typography, and arranging words to create a visual representation of the city, the final output conveys the idea of a street map. The final design output of the thesis also mimics the concept of reciprocal inspiration and influence between the city and the artist/designer.
